G.H. Mumm Reims Tour | Best Champagne Tours in Reims France

A visit to Reims would not be complete without a tour and tasting at G.H. Mumm. This was an exceptional tour and tasting which delved into the history of the house as well as the house style.

G.H. Mumm was established in 1827 by three German brothers with the help G. Heuser who was a local to Reims. The motto from the start “only the best,” is still evident today in the champagnes that the house produces. The “Cordon Rouge” was created by Georges Hermann Mumm in 1875 and still serves as the mark of excellence. In 1904, Mumm was named as an official champagne supplier to British royalty and remains an official champagne supplier to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

After learning about the history, the champagne making process and the house style, the tasting began. My tasting included a Blanc de Blancs and a Blanc de Noir from the RSRV collection. These champagnes are made from grapes from Grand Cru Villages and are balanced and elegant. These champagnes can only be purchased while visiting Mumm, so they are extra special. I brought back the Blanc de Noir which I plan to pair with a roasted chicken.

The Foujita Chapel is a chapel on the Mumm grounds that was built, designed and painted by the famous Japanese artist Léonard Foujita. Foujita also created the rose that appears on the cap of the Mumm Brut Rosé. This chapel can be visited on its own and is open to the public. The highlight of my experience was learning about the space champagne. This is a project that Mumm has been working on to create the first bubbles in space. The champagne would come out of the bottle in the shape of a large bubble which would then be caught on the small glass and the entire bubble would go in the astronaut’s mouth and burst!
